It brought access to the highest level of professional assessment and evaluation skills, and helped to ensure that your investment in training and development was cost-effective being a student in Leeds by producing results in the workplace. The Validation Service worked in partnership with organisations to provide support and advice in a wide variety of ways including

* designing your Oxford validated Award
* clarifying training and development objectives
* designing appropriate training programmes
* developing assessment objectives and selecting assessment methods
* setting standards of performance
* developing methods to record achievement
* training internal mentors and assessors
* developing assessment and support materials
* inducting participants into the development programme
* designing monitoring and reviewing procedures.

The UODLE was founded in 1857 to provide examinations for candidates in their own locality. Since then it has developed extensive networks of subject experts and centres of assessment to run examinations both nationally and internationally. The Validation Service was established in 1987 and the UODLE became the first university-based Awarding Body for National Vocational Qualifications in 1993. In April 1995 the UODLE merged with the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) to improve its service both to national and international clients, and move into the 21st century.
